Irish Smoked Eel will be extinct by the end of July...

For the last few year, the Member States of the EU have been deliberating on measures to try and restore the stock of the European Eel; the Irish Government have signed up to the agreement and, as from the end of July, eel fishing throughout the 26 Counties will be banned. The conservation measures are planned to run through the next 90 years!

There is a much disquiet amongst the eel fishermen who feel the total ban is too excessive; the authorities, however, believe that nothing but a total ban would ensure the restoration of eel stocks. We suspect that the government would find a quota system unenforceable, and have taken the precautionary option.
