St. Patrick and the snake - or was it an eel?

St. Patrick, according to legend, banned snakes from Ireland. The problem with this legend is that there never were snakes in Ireland, at least not since the last Ice Age started 3 million years ago.

Ever ones to start a controversy, we would like to propose that St. Patrick, whilst being a Saint of the first order in most regards, was possibly a bit of a chancer when it came to snakes!
