The Slippery Slope for Eels

The BBC recently reported on the serious decline in the eel population, 95% over recent years.

Given the enormous amount of elvers (the small returning baby eels) that have been harvested by man over recent years, it is hardly surprising that these amazing creatures are in trouble. We still know very little about the life of an eel, and myths and fables abound.  

We can highly recommend a fascinating read, The Book of Eels, by Tom Fort which  helps to explain why the eel is so extraordinary.

Eel fishing is now banned in Ireland, but we do have a small amount in stock from last year, the final season. And that's it.
